The Peoria Secular Humanist Society presents a special public screening of the movie, "Hug An Atheist". This 90 minute film is built around a series of interviews conducted by Sylvia Broeckx in 2012-2013. The film's objective is to dispel many stubborn and long-standing myths and untruths that plague this group of people. From the academic to the more mundane, "Hug an Atheist" answers questions that should be asked by anyone uninformed or misinformed about this growing US minority. Scholars and atheist activists provide the broader social context in which to place these regular people and their ideas and approaches to life. With the rapid cultural shift away from religion in America, and separation of church and state issues making headline news, it's important to correct several misunderstandings about those who don't believe in a god. This movie examines how non-religious people fit into this changing cultural landscape. It will help us understand that our atheist relatives, friends, and neighbors are good, caring, contributing members of society, and a lot more like everyone else than we might realize. This film is not an attempt to convert anyone away from their religion. Religious believers are highly encouraged to attend to learn more about those who do not believe. After the film, there will be an open Q an A session with members of the Peoria Secular Humanist Society. Light refreshments will be provided. Admision is free and open to the public.
