State economic index shows improvement

The rising Flash Index shows a continually improving economy in Illinois. But the University of Illinois economist who compiles the Index says the state has not seen a corresponding fall in unemployment.  Fred Giertz with the U of I’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs says that at 9.8 percent in June, the Illinois unemployment rate has fallen more than two percentage points since its peak in early 2010. But he says it should have fallen more.

Pekin students shop with a cop

About 10 Pekin kids got the chance to shop with members of the city’s police department for school supplies. The effort is a partnership between the Pekin Police Department, Salvation Army, and Target.

Sheila Simon is throwing her hat in the ring for Illinois Comptroller. Simon is currently Governor Pat Quinn’s lieutenant governor. She says she’d focus on something previous comptroller’s haven’t focused on - rooting out corruption in towns across the state.

OSF HealthCare System will not take over Proctor Hospital’s five First Care Centers and primary physician sites.  OSF Spokesman Jim Farrell says talks to transfer services from Proctor Hospital to OSF HealthCare System ended without agreement.
