Sen. Durbin says vets should receive disability payments sooner

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says the way American veterans receive disability claims has “got to change.”His comments come as the federal Department of Veterans Affairs is working on a new digital, paper-less way of handling the claims. The V.A. is working to get that done by September.

Townhall mtg to address redistricting

 

Area residents can share feedback on a proposed state constitutional amendment that would change the way political districts are drawn. Lawmakers currently draw the lines. But grassroots groups “Change Illinois!” and “Reboot Illinois” propose creating an independent commission to fill the role.

Lawmakers have a lot of work to do before legislative session wraps up

There are five days left in the Illinois General Assembly's spring session.  And as IPR'S Amanda Vinicky reports legislators have a lot of work ahead of them.

Typically, fighting over the budget carries into the waning hours of a legislative session. But Democrats, who have enough seats to pass a spending plan without any Republican votes, say they've already reached a deal.

House passes measure allowing internet gambling on horse racing

Internet gambling on horse racing would once again be legal in Illinois under legislation approved Sunday by the Illinois House of Representatives. IPR’S Brian Mackey has more.

Online and telephone horse betting has been illegal in Illinois all year.  A law authorizing it expired on Dec. 31. The practice, known as "advanced deposit wagering," was a $122 million business in Illinois last year.

Memorial Day events for Monday

Area groups are holding several events to honor past and present service members today. Peoria Navy Club, Ship 34, will hold services at Veteran’s Plaza at Riverfront Park at 10. The City of Peoria holds its annual Ceremony at the Gateway building at 10:30. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 26-02, will conduct Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Peoria Memorial Association Monument at Springdale Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. The American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville will conduct Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Monument on McKinley Street at 11.

Peoria news briefs

The City of Peoria is getting a graffiti removal machine. The Altamount Neighborhood Association is selling the machine and supporting equipment to the Peoria Police Department for one dollar.  The seven-thousand-dollar graffiti removal machine was purchased through a grant from a local rotary club. Paul Wilkinson is a member of the Altamount Neighborhood Association that’s experienced and removed gang graffiti. Wilkinson helped make the transaction possible.

Area memorial day events

Several Memorial Day events are planned this weekend to honor past and present soldiers. The American Legion Post Two conducts services Sunday morning at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 10:30, Parkview Cemetery at 11:15 and at noon at Veterans Park.
