Lock and dam agreement is done, but repairs aren’t immediate

Shipping their harvest on barges through the vast river way system is vital for Midwest farmers.  But many say the system of locks and dams on major rivers is decaying and out of date. USDA helping low-income home buyers in Il

The USDA is ready to help potential low-income home buyers in Illinois. IPR'S Emily Boyer reports.

The agency plans to spend 20-million dollars in Illinois on rural home loans this year. Housing Program Director Barry Ramsey says so far they’ve only loaned out about a third of that total. But, he says the home buying season peaks during the summer.

District 150, the Peoria Public Library, and “Look. It’s My Book” are teaming up to remind parents of the importance of kids reading through the summer. Research says children who do not read over the summer fall further behind academically. District 150 Superintendent Granita Lathan says that impacts the beginning of the school year.

Gay marriage in Il already making a difference for couples

Gay couples in dozens of Illinois counties are free to get marriage licenses for the first time starting Monday. But federal court rulings late last year allowed some same-sex couples in Cook County to get married early - if one person in the relationship was terminally ill. As Illinois Public Radio's Alex Keefe reports, those handful of marriages are offering some of the first tests of the new state law.
