238th General Support Aviation unit to be recognized this weekend

A locally-based National Guard unit deployed to Afghanistan for a year is getting recognized this weekend. The National Guard Bureau Freedom Salute Campaign is holding a ceremony Saturday for 60 members of the 2nd Battalion of the 238th General Support Aviation Unit.

The group includes members from across the state. It was charged with flying CH-47 Chinook helicopters for heavy cargo transport and air assaults. The soldiers were also responsible for re-supply operations and aviation maintenance support. The unit flew more than 31-hundred combat hours, moving more than 14-thousand people and three million pounds of cargo during its rotation.

Soldiers will be presented with encased American flags, commemorative coins, certificates of appreciation and lapel pins. Soldiers’ families will also be recognized. The Freedom Salute campaign ceremony takes place at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Peoria.
