4th Death Reported in Illinois Linked to Synthetic Marijuana

Apr 24, 2018

Illinois public health officials say a central Illinois woman has died after using synthetic marijuana.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says the most recent victim was in her 30s. He says she was a resident of Stark County, but died at a Peoria hospital. No additional details regarding the death have been released.

The most recent death is the fourth, as the state deals with an outbreak of people experiencing severe bleeding after using synthetic marijuana, also known as Spice or K2, laced with rat poison. 83 cases have been reported in Peoria and Tazewell counties. Overall, more than 150 people in 13 counties in Illinois have been sickened and three others have died.

State health officials say synthetic marijuana products are deadly, and urge people not to use them. Those who have become sick have reported coughing up blood, severe bloody noses and internal bleeding.
