Area residents encouraged to shop local this weekend

Nov 26, 2013

Area Chambers of Commerce as well as regional leaders are encouraging residents to shop local on Small Business Saturday this weekend. The national initiative is aimed at getting consumers to spend locally, and support small businesses for at least one day during the holiday shopping season.

This is the fourth year the Greater Peoria area has participated in the movement. Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says many local retailers depend on holiday sales to remain open.

"It's difficult to be a small business person, to compete with the big boxes and the folks that have multi-million dollar advertising budgets, and the ability to sometimes compensate their employees higher. But at the end of the day, I don't think that you can replace that hometown local ownership (and) the family atmosphere that you have within those locally owned businesses."

Ardis says 98-percent of all businesses in the greater Peoria area are considered small. Information on small businesses and deals they may be offering is available by visiting Small Business Saturday Central Illinois on Facebook.
