Building trades groups to hold job fair for young minorities

Area building trade groups, the NAACP and the City of Peoria are hosting a job fair this weekend for young minorities. It’s part of a long range plan the trio put together after the NAACP pointed to the lack of minorities on area job sites, specifically the Pere Marriott Hotel project.

Peoria City Manager Patrick Urich says there will be 15 different building trades represented Saturday morning at the Woodruff Career and Technical Center:

“Showing how each one of them does their specific craft, their specific trade. And we are going to be able to take interested minorities through that and show them exactly what each one of those are, from plumbers and electricians and welders. We are going to have the gamut of all of the trades there.  We are very excited to move this forward.”

The trade fair is Saturday morning at Woodruff from nine to 12.  Urich says it should take about 9 minutes to cycle through and see all the represented trades. The jobs fair is primarily for those 18 and older, but younger people are also welcome.
