Thirty Central Illinois students are forging their way through the world of material science this week at Bradley University.
The ninth annual materials camp gives high school juniors and seniors interested in engineering hands-on experiences to learn more about materials science. Marv McKimpson is the chair of this year’s camp. He says the camp offers students a window to a different facet of engineering.
"Many students are familiar, for example, with mechanical engineering,or civil engineering or electrical engineering. But many students don’t even think about the issues involved in selecting and processing materials for a particular application."
McKimpson says diverse workshops offered at the camp expose students to the variety in materials science. Students will work with biomaterials, electronic materials, metals and ceramics. The Peoria Chapter of the American Society of Materials helps organize the camp.
