Illinois Congressman John Shimkus has had little trouble winning re-election in the 15th District. In fact he ran unopposed in 2016. But this year, two Democrats are competing in the March 20th primary to challenge Shimkus in November. One of them is Carl Spoerer of Mahomet, a businessman who runs his own telecommunications firm, and also coaches the University of Illinois women’s rugby team. Spoerer told Illinois Public Media’s Jim Meadows that various factors make it possible for a Democrat to defeat Shimkus in November.
