State Representative Jim Durkin is officially the highest-ranking Republican in the Illinois House.Lawmakers of both parties unanimously approved his election Tuesday as the chamber's minority leader. One of Durkin's top priorities is getting more Republicans elected to the House. He says he's getting a late start, but plans to be competitive.

"We're going to have to make the best argument next summer, next fall, of why the Democrat policies have failed this state for the past 10 years. And I hope it starts to resonate, and I believe it is resonating with the public."

Durkin is taking over the smallest group of House Republicans in years. A lawyer from Western Springs, he replaces Representative Tom Cross of Oswego, who stepped down to run for Illinois treasurer.
