Federal funding announced for Peoria Police, economic development

Sep 27, 2013

The City of Peoria is getting federal funding to recruit or re-hire six police officers. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced the $750,000 in funding. It’s part of the Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, program.

More than 250 law enforcement agencies received $125 million in COPS grants across the country. The announcement follows a visit by Durbin to Peoria earlier this year to learn more about the city’s Don’t Shoot program aimed at reducing gun violence. It also follows a rash of homicides and shootings in Peoria in the last two weeks.

Durbin and Bustos also announced $100,000 in federal funding for the Economic Development Council of Central Illinois. The funding is to help the newly-revamped EDC bring new manufacturing business to the region.
