Highway proposal gets thumbs down from Chicago metro planning agency

Oct 10, 2013

A metro planning agency is giving a thumbs down to a controversial expressway for the far southern suburbs. IPR'S Michael Puente reports.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn supports funding the 1-billion dollar Illiana Expressway through Will County into Indiana. But a majority of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning board don’t believe the state has the money to pay for it and voted yesterday against funding it. Board member Elliott Hartstein.

"The state is in a situation right now where we can’t afford to roll the dice financially. Consequently, taking a project of this magnitude, with a risk of a billion dollars, that’s something we can’t afford to do."

But the board’s vote doesn’t kill the highway proposal. A final vote is scheduled for next week.
