National report says Bartonville coal plant causes pollution

Jul 26, 2013

Area environmental groups say a national report draws attention to Ameren Energy Resources’ coal plant in Bartonville.

The report by the Sierra Club, Waterkeeper Alliance and others, says the Edwards coal plant discharges pollutants that can cause significant health problems.  Environmental groups toured the Illinois River Thursday to explore the issue of area water pollution.  They say Ameren’s permit for water discharge at the Edwards plant is expired.  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is holding a public hearing on Ameren’s new draft permit at the Pekin Public Library August 7th.

Ameren Energy Resources has said the plant follows environmental regulations.  It also has said the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has NOT cited the plant for permit violations.
