New Veterans Drive segment now open

The City of Pekin is celebrating the completion of the central part of Veterans Drive. Local, state and federal officials cut the ribbon Friday for the additional portion of the city’s ring road project.  The one-mile stretch of pavement connects Broadway to Sheridan Road. It costs nearly $5 million. Pekin Mayor Laurie Barra says finishing this part of Veteran’s Drive means additional economic investment and better traffic flow:

“Take some of the truck traffic off route 9 in Pekin...that will revert back to a city street when the south portion is done.  So I would envision in this area, I would love to see a gas station, a hotel, anything that’s a boon to the City of Pekin,” Barra says.

The project included $four-million in federal funds and $800,000 from Pekin’s gas tax. The Southernmost part of Veteran’s Drive will cost $30 million. Construction starts next month and is planned to be complete October 2015.  The Northernmost corridor is in the engineering study phase.
