Alan Phillips will take over the post at the DeKalb school on March 1. The 59-year-old Philips will report directly to President Douglas Baker and oversee the school's daily operations and $400 million budget.
He moves to NIU from his post as executive deputy director and chief financial officer for the Illinois Board of Higher Education. It comes at a time when enrollment declines and dropping state funding are problems for public universities.
Baker says in a news release that Phillips is a "strong collaborator with a track record" of effectiveness in leading academic and business programs at schools during tough fiscal times.
