NIU football player finalist for Heisman Trophy
Huskie fans held their breath during last night's announcement on ESPN. They didn't have to wait long before 1996 Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel made it official.
"In alphabetical order...the Heisman Trust invites...Jordan Lynch...Northern Illinois University."
Lynch is one of six finalists for the award which will be presented Saturday in New York City. The senior was named the Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week a record eight times this year. He ranks fourth nationally in total offense and is second in rushing yards. He also broke the NIU single season record for touchdowns. The Huskies have their final game the day after Christmas when they face Utah State in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Florida State freshman Jameis Winston is considered the favorite to win this year's Heisman. Last year's winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M is again in the running for the award. Also getting an invite to New York City are Alabama's AJ McCarron, Auburn's Tre Mason and Andre Williams of Boston College. It's the largest number of Heisman finalists since 1994.
