Peoria County courts to allow news cameras and microphones

Feb 14, 2014

The Illinois Supreme Court Friday named Peoria County the 36th in the state to allow news cameras and microphones in the court room. The Illinois Supreme Court launched the pilot project in 2012.

Peoria is in the 10th Judicial Circuit that includes Marshal Putnam, Stark and Tazewell Counties. The four other counties in the circuit will join Peoria County in 60 days allowing News Cameras and Microphones in a court room.

Third District Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride initiated the project while serving as the chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. Kilbride’s district includes the 10th judicial Circuit. Justice Kilbride says this move allows more Illinois residents to see how the administration of justice operates in local courtrooms.

Identified news agencies will need to petition the court for access to specific court proceedings and trials.
