PHA moving ahead on Taft study

The Peoria Housing Authority will learn later this year what its best options are for the Taft Homes property. The Peoria city council recently approved hiring a consultant on behalf of the authority to study redevelopment options for the site.

The PHA is developing a taskforce of local representatives to give input in the process. Consultant, Mary Paumen, says the taskforce will consider all redevelopment options.

“This is about what’s best for the residents and the authority because the housing authority really has got to worry about their financial position. So is it best to sell the site to somebody or lease the site to somebody? Is that the best way to bring in revenue? They still have to build new units if they do that for the residents. Can they find the money to do that? I don’t know.”

Paumen says the process will also include public input including at least two community forums this summer. The Master Plan for Taft is to be complete by September.
