Proposal extends when voters can go to the polls
Marissa Liebling is an attorney with the Voting Rights Project. She says, "In 2012, 18-thousand provisional ballots were rejected because people were not properly registered or were missing from the rolls. And so to offer same-day registration precinct-wide would make sure that this new option is more accessible to the widest number of voters."
Republicans raised objections because the measure also puts a referendum on the November ballot asking voters if Illinois’ minimum wage should be increased. Democrats included that provision in the expansive election bill.
The measure still needs approval of the full House and Senate.
