The Peoria County board approved reducing building and maintenance fees by half for flood victims. The board voted 11 to five on the fee reduction while also adding two new full time employees to the Planning and Zoning Department.
The reduction in the building permit fee comes in place of the proposal that would have completely waived the fee. Curtis Luther says waiving the fee would have meant a loss of at least $100,000 for the county.
“Universally the county board and certainly our staff want to do everything possible to assist individuals who are impacted by the flood situation. At the same time, I understand that the county board has difficult decisions before it regarding additional financial impact on staffing levels,” Curtis Luther said.
One of the zoning positions will do inspections the other is administrative. The new inspections person will help defray the workload of the extra 300 structures that have completed formal damage assessments since the flood.
