Rutherford says he will support whoever gets the GOP nomination for Governor

Campaigns are competitive by nature. But the Republican race for governor has turned downright nasty. As IPR'S Amanda Vinicky reports, the party could still come together in the end.

With just over a month to go before the primary, Treasurer Dan Rutherford is fighting explosive allegations from a former high-level employee. The man's accusing Rutherford of sexual harassment and political coercion.

Rutherford vehemently denies the charges, and has at least one travel voucher that seemingly belies one of the lawsuit's claims. But there's more to it.

Rutherford says the timing is suspiciously close to the election.  And he accuses one of his opponents in the governor's race, ultra-wealthy businessman Bruce Rauner, of setting him up. Even so, if Rauner does capture the nomination, Rutherford says he'll back him.

RUTHERFORD:"I will support the Republican nominee."

AMANDA: "Even if it's Bruce Rauner?"

RUTHERFORD: "I will support the Republican nominee."

Rauner says claims of his involvement are false.
