Shop Washington event kicks off Friday

Peoria area residents have an opportunity to support businesses in Washington this weekend. The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Shop Washington” event runs Friday, Saturday and Monday. Five Washington businesses were physically damaged from the November 17th tornado.

Chevie Ruder is the Director of the Washington Chamber of Commerce. She says the majority of other businesses suffered the economic impact of the storm.

“We have over 1100 homes that were directly affected by the tornadoes. That’s 100 families that are making their way back to Washington, or are still not in Washington. That’s 100 families that are not shopping locally, that are not eating locally and are sleeping somewhere else. And so we need to expose new people to Washington so that they can kind of help us make up that difference that we’re seeing,” says Ruder.

Ruder says Peoria residents who visit Washington this weekend are encouraged to wear orange and bring identification, showing their address. Participating businesses will be offering up to 25-percent off items to those visiting the city. A list of stores and their specials are available at the Washington Chamber of Commerce website.

CityLink will also be providing bus service for Peoria shoppers Saturday from the Riverfront Clock Tower at 10 in the morning and returning at three.
