Illinois residents will soon be able to apply for permits to carry concealed weapons.  Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has safety concerns about who will be allowed to get those permits.

Swearing-in ceremony focuses on gun violence for federal prosecutor

Gun violence was the focus at a ceremony Monday to install the new top federal prosecutor in Chicago.    Zach Fardon’s first day last month as the new U.S. attorney brought a public rebuke from Mayor Rahm Emanuel.  He told the Sun-Times that federal prosecutors do a horrible job on gun crimes.  At Fardon’s swearing in ceremony yesterday, with Emanuel in the front row, U.S. attorney General Eric Holder said solving gun violence is hard work.  HOLDER: It is the product of cooperative endeavor and sustained effort. Recent gun violence in the city of Peoria has many voicing concern if not a little on edge. A double homicide last week that included the death of KieAmber Beard-who was pregnant-was accompanied by several gunshot wounds including a pizza delivery guy. And Beard’s cousin was shot to death in the front yard of her mother’s house during a family gathering in her honor. Police have made at least two arrests but are also targeting more patrols in the generally areas impacted by the violence. Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard and Captain Mike Eddleman met with reporters yesterday to talk through some of the response efforts. We are using the press interview for this Outside The Horseshoe.

Gun-control advocates rally in Springfield

As Illinois lawmakers consider lifting the concealed-carry ban, activists rallied to call on legislators to also enact new gun regulations. A court has given the state until early June to pass a law allowing people to carry guns in public.   While gun-control advocates like Senator Dan Kotowski have accepted that, they say Illinois can still enact restrictions.
