Peoria opens cooling centers amid high temperatures

Jul 13, 2015

Area resident needing relief from the high temperatures can stop by several cooling centers in Peoria.  The City/County health Department says the centers include the Salvation Army on Northeast Jefferson, the Friendship House on Northeast Madison, and all Peoria Fire Stations, and the Civic Center Verizon Café.  The Department also says residents should stay indoors, wear light colored, and avoid caffeine, alcohol and other dehydrating liquids.

Peoria Public Schools is dismissing classes early starting Wednesday through Friday due to the heat wave.  Middle and High Schools will dismiss at 1 and primary schools dismiss at 2. Lunches will be served prior to dismissal each day.  District 150 is turning some school buildings into cooling centers amid this week's heat wave. 10 of the district's 27 buildings do not have air conditioning systems. Students are also getting additional fans, ice and water if there's no air conditioning in the building.
