Senate approves changes to state election law

The Illinois Senate has approved a multi-faceted change to the state's election laws. The legislation is almost as notable for what it does NOT do, as for what it does. IPR'S Brian Mackey explains.

The proposal would make dozens of changes to state law including online voter registration. But until Wednesday, the legislation also would have changed how Illinois gets a lieutenant governor.

The Illinois House has voted to eliminate the office of lieutenant governor.Republican Representative David McSweeney of Barrington Hills says the office costs about two-million dollars a year.

"It's an office that is a luxury. I understand if we were sitting a pile of cash, if we had a triple-A bond rating, it would be a different story," says McSweeney.
