The farmer’s market in downtown Peoria this weekend will have more on display than the usual offering of fresh produce and artisan foods. The Peoria Riverfront Market says there will also be live music, face painting, and giveaways to include “I love Farmer’s Market” tattoos.

The hype coincides with National Farmers Market Week that runs Aug. 7-13. It recognizes the economic and public health benefits of the increasingly popular form of commerce.  

Food hubs helping struggling farms

“Food hubs” are popping up across the country. These food processing and distribution centers make it easier for restaurants, grocery stores, and others to buy local food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says there are more than 220 of them in 40 states plus the District of Columbia.
