Report: more insurance, increased abuse cases for IL children

The annual Kids Count report shows fewer Illinois children are without health insurance, but the number of cases of child abuse is climbing.  The report from Voices for Illinois Children assesses a variety of areas in a child’s well-being including education, health and development and economic security.  It shows Peoria County’s child abuse rate is double the state average. Trish Fox directs the Peoria Center for Youth and Family Solutions. She says that family income is a significant factor towards child abuse:

U of I officials respond to verbal abuse of chancellor

University of Illinois President Robert Easter and Trustees Chair Chris Kennedy have weighed in on this week’s verbal abuse on social media against the Urbana campus chancellor.

IL lawmaker calls on child welfare agency admins to resign

An Illinois State Senator is calling on top administrators running the state’s child welfare agency to resign.  That’s after they revealed the agency had mis-reported how many Illinois children died from abuse or neglect for the past several years.

Children’s Advocacy Center gets national recognition

The Peoria County Children's Advocacy Center is receiving  national recognition for its work with child abuse victims.   The National Children's Alliance designated the center with a five year accreditation.  Donna Cruz is an Assistant Peoria County State's Attorney and heads the Center. She says the national honor recognizes the way the center investigates alleged child abuse cases. She says that includes using specially-trained interviewers to talk to children in a non-threatening environment:

Group speaks out on priest sex abuse settlement

The Peoria Diocese is paying a more than $1.3 million settlement in a child sex abuse case that took place under tenure of Newark Archbishop John Myers. A deposition with the Archbishop outlines questionable incidents by Monsignor Thomas Maloney during his time in the Peoria Diocese. The settlement is in response to former altar boy Andrew Ward’s molestation claims against Monsignor Thomas Maloney.
