University of Illinois History Professor Adrian Burgos says baseball became a true passion early in life. And through his own family and love for the game, Burgos learned about the role Latinos have played since the sport’s inception. Burgos was born just blocks from New York’s Yankee Stadium… and after moving to Florida, he lived near Little Yankee Stadium, the team’s former spring training home.

For the first time in more than 30 years, a Little League team from Chicago will take the field in the Little League World Series this week. The Jackie Robinson West Little League All-Stars beat a team from southern Indiana over the weekend to earn the Great Lakes Region’s slot in the series.

2013 was one of the worst seasons in Chicago baseball history, but fans now have reason to celebrate. Pitcher and former Cub Greg Maddux and longtime White Sox slugger Frank Thomas were both elected Wednesday to Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame, along with pitcher Tom Glavine, Maddux’s teammate with the Atlanta Braves.
