Lawmakers have a lot of work to do before legislative session wraps up

There are five days left in the Illinois General Assembly's spring session.  And as IPR'S Amanda Vinicky reports legislators have a lot of work ahead of them.

Typically, fighting over the budget carries into the waning hours of a legislative session. But Democrats, who have enough seats to pass a spending plan without any Republican votes, say they've already reached a deal.

House to consider concealed-carry legislation

A measure that would allow Illinois residents to carry concealed firearms is heading to the House floor after lawmakers approved it in committee Thursday. The legislation prohibits concealed-carry in many public places, like public transit, sports arenas, schools, and street festivals. Some of these have been sticking points for gun-rights advocates, who would prefer universal carry.

Senate committee to vote on gun control measure

An Illinois State Senate committee is expected to vote on a gun control measure today. It's scheduled to hear from some parents whose children died in December’s mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. IPR’S Tony Arnold reports.

Three parents from Connecticut talked Sunday in Chicago about banning high capacity magazines. A proposed bill would make magazines that hold more than 10 rounds illegal. Nicole Hockley’s 6-year-old son Dylan was killed in the Newtown school shooting.

Gov. Quinn says local communities should have control over concealed-carry

Governor Pat Quinn has reiterated his support for a concealed-carry law that gives local communities the option to impose their own restrictions. Lawmakers have until June 9th to legalize concealed carry after a federal appeals court ruled Illinois' ban unconstitutional. Last week, House members defeated a plan last week that would have established a way to allow qualified gun owners to carry concealed weapons.

Concealed carry plan fails in the House

The Illinois House Thursday night voted down a concealed carry plan backed by gun-rights activists. Legislators are under a court order to pass a law by early June that will allow people to carry guns in public.
