Illinois House defeats gun control measure

A gun control measure was defeated Wednesday in the Illinois House. The proposal, modeled after  New York's law, would have let sheriffs decide whether an applicant has a compelling reason to carry a gun in public. Proponents like Democratic Representative Christian Mitchell of Chicago say it's a way to take regional differences into account.

The Illinois House begins debate on concealed carry

A raucous debate over guns got underway Tuesday in the Illinois House of Representatives. At issue are the restrictions that will be in place as lawmakers comply with a federal court order demanding the state allow people to carry guns in public. Lawmakers are fighting over how loose or restrictive a concealed carry law should be.

The Democratic leadership in the Illinois House has engineered an unusually open debate, so far 27 amendments have been proposed from both sides of the issue.

State moving on passing concealed-carry law


   Illinois is moving forward to meet a deadline to pass a law allowing people to carry guns in public. IPR’s Brian Mackey has more. Illinois is the last state without any form of concealed-carry, and a federal court says that has to change. It gave lawmakers until early June to do so. Gun-rights enthusiasts filled a hearing room in Springfield as a House committee heard from activists on both sides of the issue.Todd Vandermyde, a lobbyist with the National Rifle Association, made several demands for the concealed-carry law.
