Writers gather in the Quad Cities for conference

  For three days every year, writers gather in the Quad Cities to learn about poetry and prose. This week, the Midwest Writing Center will host its annual David R. Collins Writers Conference.  IPR's Renata Sago talks with beginning novelists and professional poets who hope to find inspiration and hone their skills.  

10 state erosion conference held in Quad Cities

This week, engineers, contractors, and municipal workers from ten states will meet in the Quad Cities to learn how to prevent erosion and improve water quality. Tuesday through Thursday, two chapters of the International Erosion Control Association will hold a joint conference called, "Great Connections." Brian Stineman, Davenport's Natural Resources Manager, expects more than 200 people to attend the workshops, field trips, and other sessions.

Communities affected by a natural disaster need to both physically respond and take time to calculate accurate damage estimates. That's according to Washington Engineer Ed Andrews speaking at the I-CAT Transportation Conference in East Peoria. He says state and federal deadlines to submit damage assessments kick-in soon after a disaster:

Peoria high school teams joining Big 12 Conference

District 150’s high schools will join the Big 12 Conference next school year.  That includes all sports except football, which starts in the conference in 2015.   District Athletic Director Bob Darling says the move will boost competition for the three district high schools and Notre Dame High School:

Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon is hosting a forum in Peoria this week promoting conservation and recreation on the Illinois River. She says one-third of the speakers at the Illinois River Coordinating Council cancelled their trip to Peoria because of the government shutdown:

Peoria is hosting the 27th Annual Regional Neighborhood Network Conference September 19th through the 21st.  The conference brings more than 400 community leaders together to share neighborhood improvement strategies and it also includes community leaders from six Midwestern states.  Councilmembers Eric Turner and Ryan Spain are our guests to talk about the conference. The show aired on 89.9 WCBU, Peoria Public Radio at 6:00p.m., Tuesday, September 10th, 2013 before the live broadcast of the Peoria City Council meeting.
