Zalcman out in 18th Congressional race

Apr 13, 2015

Bloomington attorney Marc Zalcman is withdrawing his bid to fill the 18th Congressional District seat. Zalcman, a Republican, says the timeline to get 1,000 petition signatures in about three weeks is too tight to successfully achieve.  Zalcman called the timeline unfair, and says he plans to run in the 2016 Republican primary. Zalcman was the only other declared Republican in the race, running against state Senator Darin LaHood in the July primary

A Springfield school board member says he wants to become the Democratic nominee in the upcoming special election to fill the seat vacated by former Congressman Aaron Schock.  Adam Lopez wants to fill the congressional seat that Schock left under a cloud.  Democratic leaders said in recent weeks they were searching for a potential candidate to run in the Republican-leaning district. Lopez describes himself as a conservative Democrat.  Lopez works as a financial representative for County Financial. He says he wants to keep his job if elected and not take the $174,000 congressional salary.

Governor Bruce Rauner originally set the dates for early June and late July.  A judge must still approve the proposed dates.

When voters in northwestern Illinois go to the polls in November, there may be a third name on the ballot for Congress. This week, Bill Fawell, from Galena announced he's running for the 17th District seat now held by East Moline democrat Cheri Bustos.
