Peoria County launching new business website, minority contractor focus

Peoria County is launching a new website this spring to help business owners get assistance.  Greater Peoria SourceLink launches this spring.  The website will be and cost $20,000 a year to run.  Mark Rothert is Assistant Peoria County Administrator for Economic Development. Peoria City, County detail legislative priorities

Peoria County wants area lawmakers to help transition to a consolidated election commission.  The county is asking for oversight over the city election commission’s annual budget before seeking to ask voters if they want a combined commission. Currently the city election commission receives an annual budget allocation from the county based on a funding formula. Tazewell County cities, county holding emergency meetings for tornado recovery

Several municipalities in Tazewell County are holding special meetings Friday to vote on expanding the scope of tornado recovery efforts.  The East Peoria, Washington and Pekin City Councils will separately vote on local disaster declarations.  Washington Mayor Gary Manier says the measure will allow public health and public works personnel to more quickly respond to recovery issues as they arise:

Peoria County OKs septic system code changes

The Peoria County Board voted overwhelmingly to approve on-site wastewater system code changes.  A special wastewater working group has met 11 times since April working on the proposed rules.  Two board members voted against the rules, saying they were beyond what state code required and were too strict on residents.  Board member Mike Phelan supported the code changes.  He says the new regulations reflect months of cooperation between residents:

Children’s Advocacy Center gets national recognition

The Peoria County Children's Advocacy Center is receiving  national recognition for its work with child abuse victims.   The National Children's Alliance designated the center with a five year accreditation.  Donna Cruz is an Assistant Peoria County State's Attorney and heads the Center. She says the national honor recognizes the way the center investigates alleged child abuse cases. She says that includes using specially-trained interviewers to talk to children in a non-threatening environment:

Peoria County board members want a close look at public defender contract

Some Peoria County board members want to change the way the county selects its public defender attorney. The 10th Judicial Circuit Judges have used the same public defender for decades, without bidding out the service. The County Board then pays the costs for the 29 assistant public defenders.
