Several area Memorial Day events set

Area groups are holding several events to honor past and present service members today.  Peoria Navy Club, Ship 34, will hold services at Veteran’s Plaza at Riverfront Park at 10.  The City of Peoria holds its annual Ceremony at the Gateway building at 10:30.  Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 26-02, will conduct Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Peoria Memorial Association Monument at Springdale Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. The American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville will conduct Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Monument on McKinley Street at 11. 

State employees will have to be more forthcoming about their volunteer work, legal status and property holdings under an executive order Governor Bruce Rauner signed Tuesday afternoon. The new governor was unwilling to specify what more he'll disclose about his finances.

The Illinois General Assembly has voted to make same-day voter registration a permanent feature of Illinois elections.

Caterpillar shows products in action at Edwards center

Caterpillar invited area journalists to learn more about the company and drive some of the construction and mining equipment.  It’s part of Cat’s Media Day event at the Edwards Demonstration and Learning Center.  The two-acre facility has a large testing arena where as many as 200 people can see drivers perform coordinated movements.  Center Supervisor Chad Cremeens says the demonstrations are partly intended to show off Cat’s products:

Medical students tear into envelopes during Match Day

Fourth year medical students across the country – including 44 in Peoria - tore into sealed envelopes today.  The students at the U of I College of Medicine in Peoria found out where they would go for their residency programs in the annual “Match Day” ritual. Five students from this year’s class are also remaining in Peoria for their residency programs.  That includes Lisa Fosnot, who is studying internal medicine at OSF. She says she wanted to remain in the area:
