District 150 drafts plan to better monitor spending, travel

The Peoria Public School board is drafting a policy that would change how purchases and employee travel are approved. The move comes as some board members express concern over recent trips to out-of-state conferences.

The policy would require varying levels of consent for purchases, depending on the size of the expenditure being written off. Board member Rick Cloyd calls the draft “a cleanup” of how the district’s purchases are currently reviewed and carried out.

The District 150 school board added several hundred thousand dollars back into its budget for 2016. The move comes as the district grapples with a 13 million dollar deficit.

Dozens of District 150 parents turned out in support of a behavioral program at two schools during last night’s board meeting.  The school board is considering whether to cut the ELITE program:

A program that aims to help ex-offenders get jobs and stay out of prison graduated its fifth class Thursday. 14 people successfully got through the summer session of the ELITE Re-Entry program. The graduation ceremony took place at the Federal Court House with a speech from Judge Joe Billy McDade, a certificate presentation and music.

Homeless student number jumps in District 150

The number of reported homeless students in District 150 jumped 50-percent compared to last academic year.  Peoria Public Radio's Alex Rusciano reports:   

 District 150 gets federal and state funding to support the number of students without a regular residence.  422 students were counted as homeless last school year.  That number jumped to 635 this year.  York Powers is the District 150 Family and Community coordinator.  He says the increase is partly the result of the economy:
