Measure regulating fracking gains steam

A new plan to regulate the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing is back on track in the Illinois legislature. IPR’S Amanda Vinicky has more.

New technology allows energy companies to use high volumes of water mixed with chemicals to drill deep into the ground for oil and natural gas. There's hope Illinois' New Albany shale could be rich with both. But before companies start "fracking," as the practice is known, the state needs to set up rules.

Madigan discusses what issues lawmakers could deal with before adjournment

Illinois' legislators have less than a month before they're scheduled to adjourn.  The Speaker of the Illinois House made some predictions about what may and may not happen before then. IPR’S Amanda Vinicky reports.

                                                                A measure to legalize same sex marriage in Illinois already got state Senators' approval. But the Speaker of the Illinois House says there's not enough support for it to pass in that chamber. Mike Madigan said in March that gay marriage was a dozen votes shy in the House.

Madigan supports fracking moratorium

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan doesn't want Illinois to allow fracking, a controversial process that injects a mixture of water and chemicals deep underground to reach oil and natural gas reserves.  IPR’s Amanda Vinicky reports. 

 Companies are longing to access the oil and natural gas laced in the rocks of the New Albany Shale, in southeastern Illinois.
