Pension plan could be nearing completion

Legislators writing an overhaul of the state's pension systems could be nearing the end of their work. IPR'S Amanda Vinicky has the latest.                                                             

Feedback's been plentiful since late last month, when a draft of a pension plan drawn up by a bipartisan legislative committee was leaked.

Rauner pushing term limits for governor

Kwame Raoul not entering governor’s race

State Sen. Kwame Raoul watched candidate speeches from the back of the room at the Democratic County Chairmen’s Association annual brunch earlier this month in Springfield. He was considering a run for governor at the time, but on Thursday said he will not seek the office.

Quinn praises Madigan’s service as AG

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn praised Lisa Madigan’s service as attorney general Tuesday.  That comes after Madigan decided not to challenge Quinn in next year’s Democratic primary for governor.  Madigan said she wouldn’t run since her father plans to continue serving as Speaker of the Illinois House.  Quinn said little about Madigan’s decision when asked about it by reporters Tuesday:

Rauner joins Republican Governors race

A wealthy Chicago area businessman is joining the race for the Republican nomination for Governor. Bruce Rauner used the internet to make his announcement.   IPR’s Sean Crawford reports:

Rauner's video is both a good way to deliver a message and avoid reporter's questions. 

The millionaire venture capitalist who co-founded a private equity firm  has been rumored to be a candidate for months.  He's been traveling the state on what he called "listening tours."

Supreme Court denies George Ryan appeal

Former Illinois Governor George Ryan’s last-ditch effort to appeal his criminal conviction is being denied.  The U.S. Supreme Court made that decision Tuesday.  IPR’s Alex Keefe reports: Ryan’s lawyers have argued for years his corruption conviction should be re-considered after a change in the so-called “honest services” law. The change would require prosecutors to prove a defendant took bribes - and Ryan’s lawyers argued the government never proved that.  But on Tuesday, justices denied Ryan’s appeal without explanation.
