health insurance exchange

An Illinois group is warning that if Obamacare is repealed without a replacement, there could be significant human and financial consequences.

President-elect Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans made repealing the Affordable Care Act a key plank in their campaigns.

That could be expensive, says Illinois Hospital Association president A-J Wilhelmi.

Choices will be fewer for health insurance marketplace customers shopping for 2017 coverage.  The Illinois Department of Insurance says 75% of Illinois counties will have only one or two insurance companies selling coverage on the health law marketplace for 2017. Blue Cross Blue Shield will be the only insurer selling marketplace policies in seven counties.

Aetna is leaving the Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange in Illinois for 2017, further reducing competition.  Aetna's announcement leaves six companies selling plans for next year to individuals and families on the Illinois "Obamacare" marketplace.

Senate approves creation of health insurance exchange

May 24, 2013

The Illinois Senate took a key step Thursday toward implementing the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare." Senators approved the creation of a "health insurance exchange." But as IPR’S Brian Mackey reports, it's still a long way from becoming law.

A health insurance exchange is at the heart of the Affordable Care Act. It's a marketplace where people who don't otherwise have insurance, like through an employer, are supposed to be able to find it.
