A 22-year-old Peoria man was shot and killed over the weekend.

Authorities say 24-year-old Chynna Stapleton of Chicago has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly slamming an 18-year-old into a tree with her car after an argument. 

Victim, Suspects Identified in Tuesday Homicide

Details are emerging related to a homicide that took place during the early morning hours on Peoria’s South Side.

The County Coroner released the identity of the victim as 63-year-old Garrison R. Collins. He was the resident of a home on the the 1400 block of S. Stanley, where police found him in the basement, following the shooting Tues., just before 1:00am.

Coroner Jamie Harwood says a gunshot wound to the neck likely caused Collins to die immediately.

EUREKA, Ill. (AP) - A Bloomington high school teacher has been charged with first-degree murder in her husband's stabbing death.

Bond is $1 million for 30-year-old Sarah Mellor of Bloomington, who teaches Spanish at Bloomington High School. Prosecutors say 31-year-old Mark Mellor of Bloomington was stabbed late Saturday during an argument with his wife at a private campsite in rural Woodford County. Sarah Mellor remains jailed at the Woodford County jail in Eureka.

 Prosecutors say relatives drove Mark Mellor from the campsite to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. The McLean County coroner said preliminary autopsy results found he died from a stab wound to the chest.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A mental health evaluation has been ordered for a central Illinois man who is charged with murder in his parents' stabbing deaths.

Springfield psychiatrist Dr. Terry Killian was appointed to examine 25-year-old Brian Petersen of Bloomington to determine if he is mentally fit to stand trial. A judge set Petersen's bond at $6 million Monday after he was charged in the deaths of his mother, 63-year-old Nancy Petersen, and his father, 68-year-old Bruce Petersen.

FARMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police say a Farmington police officer shot a suspect in a domestic-battery investigation after the suspect repeatedly punched the officer in the head.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon when the officer pulled over the suspect while responding to a report of domestic battery. 

 State police say the suspect charged the officer and began striking the officer in the head. They say the officer then grabbed a pistol and fired one shot.

Police are piecing together details about the case of a woman who was found dead in a trash container last week. 

County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says the woman is believed to be 43-year-old Taquilla M. Jackson, who lived at 1300 South Easton Avenue.

Police Captain Loren Marion says the body was found two blocks away from her residence.

“We had two scenes," Marion said. "One where the body was found and the crime scene itself, so a lot of work has been done in the last 24 hours.”

Seven suspects are in custody linked to the shooting death of 14-year-old Tommie Forest earlier this month. 

Police say one of the suspects, a 17-year-old who police won’t identify, is affiliated with the CUC or “Cleanup Crew” gang. CUC is affiliated with Peoria's West Bluff neighborhood.

“Other than that we did not have any documentation to be able to say that the other individuals were part of any group.” Captain Loren Marion said. 

Peoria Police have arrested one person in connection with the shooting death of 14-year old Tommie Forest.

Peoria Police are still investigating the homicide of 14-year old Tommie Forest as the community mourns the loss of youth.

Police responded to a ShotSpotter Alert near the 24-hundred blocks of North Flora and North Ellis early Saturday morning.

Three additional male juveniles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries from two scenes.

Forest lived on Sterling and was pronounced dead in the backyard of 24-05 Flora.

Peoria Police Investigating Early Morning Homicide

Peoria Police are investigating a homicide that occurred early Saturday morning.  Police responded to a ShotSpotter Alert near the 2400 blocks of North Flora North Ellis.  Police three male juveniles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  One male juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene of another residence on North Flora.  Police say initial information shows the shootings result from a home invasion on North Flora.  Those with information on the incident should call the Peoria Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Peoria Police say they’ve made three arrests related to the February shooting death of 12-year-old Demarcus Payne.  

Peoria saw its 13th homicide of the year Tuesday.  Police responded to the 1600 block of North Great Oak Road to a report of gunfire.  21-year-old Quenton Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.  Police say they’re looking for a suspect with connection to the shooting.  18-year-old Darrell M. Brown is wanted for first degree murder. He’s described as 5’11, about 150 pounds, with black hair. Brown should be considered armed and dangerous and not be approached if spotted.   18-year-old Draneol I.

Peoria Gears Up For Night Out Against Crime

The City of Peoria is celebrating National Night Out against Crime Tuesday evening. More than 30 neighborhood associations are participating with cook outs, kids games and neighborly conversation. Most events run from five or six to eight o’clock tomorrow evening. The annual event follows a recent rash of shooting deaths in the South Side and East Bluff.

Authorities in Chicago say they've charged three boys in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old. The Chicago Police Department says the boys were charged as adults Sunday with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and discharging a firearm causing bodily harm. The police department did not identify the boys because they are juveniles. The three are expected to appear in bond court Sunday afternoon. Police say the three tried to rob 15-year-old Kimon Wheeler late Wednesday. Wheeler turned to flee and was shot in the back.

Dozens of residents turned out in downtown Peoria last night to oppose recent homicides in the city.

The Lake County coroner has determined that the death of a suburban Chicago teenager at the hands of Zion police officer was a homicide. 

A central Illinois woman has pleaded guilty to mutilating a human body and concealing a homicide in connection with the slaying of a 74-year-old farmer whose remains were found in two counties.

Peoria sees first homicide of 2015

The City of Peoria is recording its first homicide of the year. Police say 17-year-old Tyrone Jones Jr. was found in the 1500 block of South Arago Street with multiple gunshot wounds Monday evening. 

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says Jones was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Anyone with information on the shooting should call Peoria Police or Crime Stoppers.

Coroner rules Tazewell County death a homicide

The Tazewell County Coroner is ruling the death of 66-year-old Carole Levin a homicide. James Baldi says he made the decision after considering signs of starvation and dehydration when Levin’s body was found last summer. He says he hopes the case can help residents be more vigilant about checking on elderly friends and neighbors: 

Peoria Police are investigating the city’s fifth homicide in less than a month.  County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says the body of 31-year old Carnell Ashford was found Friday in the backyard of 1401 Northeast Perry.  She says Ashford has a Chicago address, but was reportedly living in Peoria for the last year.  Ingersoll says autopsy results are expected Saturday.
