Lawsuit: State Withheld Medical Services to Children

A lawsuit against Illinois’ Department of Healthcare and Family Services claims the state illegally withholds medically necessary services from children with severe mental health disorders. The case was settled in federal court this week.

An Illinois review board has approved a plan to build a new hospital in Rockford.  The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board voted unanimously to approve the proposal from Rockford-based MercyRockford Health System. 

Construction has resumed on the exterior of UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center. The construction project was halted last week when a worker fell about 30 feet from the scaffolding. The East Moline Glass Company employee remains hospitalized.  

A union representing more than 1,500 registered nurses is planning a strike at University of Chicago Medical Center to call attention to issues during contract negotiations.  National Nurses United says the strike will start Thursday at 7 a.m.

Area hospitals asking to limit visits amid flu season

Peoria’s hospitals are asking people to limit visits during the heightened part of the flu season.  OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and UnityPoint Health Methodist-Proctor say the request is voluntary, but may change if necessary to reflect community health concerns.  Both hospitals request that anyone under 18 refrain from visiting to limit exposure to children. They also ask people to avoid visiting if they feel sick, to cough into a tissue and wash hands frequently. 

State board approves Kewanee Hospital merger with OSF

Kewanee Hospital is joining the OSF Healthcare System in April under a new name. A state review board approved the merger between the two groups. Kewanee Hospital will be re-named OSF Saint Luke Medical Center during a dedication ceremony in the spring. The Kewanee Hospital CEO says the move allows the hospital to better serve its area patients.

Sen. Mark Kirk back in hospital

Illinois U.S. Senator Mark Kirk was back in the hospital this weekend to have  his gall bladder removed.

UnityPoint Health-Methodist plans to add a new hospital entrance and surface parking at the corner of Glen Oak and Hamilton.  

The state of Illinois has removed Urbana-based Health Alliance from its list of retiree contracts, as of January 2014.
