House Speaker Paul Ryan

Congressman Darin LaHood says he’s “thrilled” with his new committee assignment.

Speaker Paul Ryan appointed LaHood to the House Ways and Means Committee.

LaHood considers it a significant committee because it deals with taxation, trade, healthcare, and many entitlement programs.

“..Those are important issues to the American people. They’re important to our seniors. They’re important to every facet of our economic system.”

Rep. LaHood: 'Tax Reform Plays in Peoria'

House and Senate Republicans are hustling on a compromise tax overhaul this week, in hopes of getting it to the President’s desk by Christmas.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he's concerned that President Donald Trump may follow through with his threat to force a government shutdown if Congress fails to approve money for a proposed wall on the United States' southern border.

Some observers have said House Speaker Paul Ryan has the worst of both worlds in saying he will not defend Donald Trump, but not rescinding his endorsement following the controversy over a video tape of Trump advocating sexual assault recorded in 2005.

This leaves Ryan open to criticism from Trump supporters and from Democrats seeking to eliminate the GOP majority.

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced this week that he will not yet support Donald Trump in his

presidential run.  In response, Trump said he is not ready to support Ryan's agenda either.

It appears Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL, 16th) will also stay away from Trump's bid for now.
