Field widens for the 18th Dist seat

Apr 21, 2015

The son of former White House cabinet member and longtime Congressman Ray LaHood remains the overwhelming favorite as the field takes shape for the race to replace ex-U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock. Yesterday was the final day to file nominating papers for the July 7 primary. Donald Rients of Benson and Mike Flynn of Quincy have filed paperwork to challenge Darin LaHood in the Republican primary. Adam Lopez of Springfield and Rob Mellon of Quincy have filed to run as Democrats.

The dates have been set in the special election to replace former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock. A federal judge in Chicago signed a consent decree Tuesday scheduling a July 7 primary and a Sept. 10 general election. Schock resigned his seat representing Illinois' 18th Congressional District last month amid questions about his office expenses and campaign spending. The Justice Department is investigating the Peoria Republican and a grand jury has begun hearing testimony about the matter. Candidates may begin filing nominating papers for the office Wednesday. GOP state Sen.
