CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office is suing the nation's largest student loan company, alleging unfair and deceptive practices with lending and debt collection.

State and federal authorities are trying to find out why 1,500 absentee ballot applications were left in a Rock Island post office box for three weeks.

The city of Chicago is asking a judge to overturn an Illinois attorney general's ruling that police officers' personal emails are a matter of public record.  The city filed the complaint arguing that officers' personal emails concerning the shooting death of a black teenager by a white officer aren't subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

The management of Illinois’ lottery is under legal review.  Illinois’ lottery is run by a private company named Northstar. And Northstar is part of a partnership made up of two large gambling companies that run lottos around the world.

Illinois lawmakers are due back in Springfield later this week. Outgoing Governor Pat Quinn called a special session on Jan. 8 to discuss an election to replace late comptroller Judy Baar Topinka.

With the death of Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, it would seem that the next step is for the Governor to appoint a successor. However, election officials are unsure about the process.

Illinois residents could have a harder time access government information under new legislation before the General Assembly. The plan makes it harder for people to get repaid legal costs when a government wrongfully denies access to public documents. At the same time, it makes it easier for governments to keep certain information off-limits.

The Illinois Libertarian Party has filed a criminal complaint against the state's Republican Party. The Libertarians allege the GOP hired armed private investigators to go to the homes of voters who hadsigned the petitions to put the Libertarian slate on the November election ballot.

Peoria gas station operator charged with tax fraud

A state effort cracking-down on gas station operators for tax fraud has netted charges for a Peoria man.
