Families with children who are blind or disabled have a new option for investing money, without jeopardizing their federal benefits.

Illinois could miss out on roughly 31 million dollars if the state goes another year without a budget.  State Treasurer Michael Frerichs says already, Illinois lost out on nearly 8 million dollars of investment income because of the impasse.  Frerichs says that’s because it's his duty to make sure that cash is available to pay the state's bills.

A federal judge has ruled that allegations of sexual harassment against former Illinois state Treasurer Dan Rutherford can go to trial over the objections of state lawyers. 

The race for Illinois treasurer changed course quickly Tuesday as late votes counted in several suburban counties showed a surge for Democrat Mike Frerichs. Frerichs took a lead of over 3,000 votes against Republican Tom Cross after posting large leads in suburban Cook County and other collar counties.

In the race for Illinois State Treasurer, Republican Tom Cross' lead widened ever so slightly Tuesday over Democrat Mike Frerichs. But that 500 vote advantage is microscopic, when compared to the 3.3 million votes cast.

The Illinois State Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a candidate for state treasurer for the first time. CEO Todd Maisch says Republican State Representative and former House Minority Leader Tom Cross is best suited to restore fiscal sanity and grow the state economy.  

The Democratic candidate for state treasurer is catching flak from Republicans, who are critical of his time as a local official. But Mike Frerichs' campaign says Republican opponent Tom Cross is playing  "revisionist history."

Topinka kicks off re-election campaign in Peoria

Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka stopped through Peoria as part of the kick-off of her re-election campaign. Topinka was flanked by area Republican lawmakers during her so-called, “Common Sense Express” Tour. 

Illinois House of Representatives

Wednesday, Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross told colleagues he would soon step down. As IPR's Brian Mackey reports, there are a handful of lawmakers who've already set their sights on his job.

House Republicans say Cross told them he'd resign as leader in October. He reportedly didn't say what his plans are, although it's widely rumored he intends to run for state treasurer.
