State homecare workers calling for wage increase

There are thousands of personal support workers in Illinois -- homecare workers who provide support to developmentally disabled people, and those with other special needs.  Advocates say the average wage for the field is just over nine dollars, and they're calling for an increase.  Charlotte Cronin's son Daniel is 28.  Cronin says his severe developmental disabilities make it difficult to care for him by herself. Cronin says the personal support workers, like the ones her son relies on, deserve better pay.

Illinois’ Board of Education is asking the General Assembly for a billion dollar increase in the new state budget. This comes even as the state’s already projected to lose at least double that.

IL bar exam fees increasing

Area unemployment down from March, up from last year

The number of people filing unemployment claims decreased one percent from March to April.  The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports the unemployment rate at 7.9 percent in the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area.  That’s up a half-a-percent from the same time last year.  2,600 fewer jobs were added last month compared to April last year.  That’s largely due to a temporary layoff in manufacturing jobs.  But more than 1,000 jobs were added in educational-health services compared to the same time last year. 

ICC tuition to increase eight percent

Illinois Central College tuition is going up eight percent next school year. The ICC board of trustees approved the  increase Wednesday. It raises the tuition rate about nine dollars per credit hour. 

New proposal would make income tax increase permanent

The Illinois income tax increase would be made permanent in the latest proposal to fix the state's underfunded pension systems. The increase, from 3 percent to 5 percent, was set to begin easing back in 2014.

But Representative Lou Lang, a Democrat from Skokie, says the state can't afford that. He says Illinois taxpayers didn't create the pension problem, but it's a problem they're stuck with.
