North Peoria nature center project gets state funding

The Peoria Park District is putting some state parks grant funding to work on building a Nature Center in Tawny Oaks. It’s next to Singing Woods off Route 88 in North Peoria. Bonnie Noble is the Executive Director of the Peoria Park District. She says the more than $217,000 state grant gets the Tawny Oaks Nature Center project started:

Teacher evaluations, test changes in State of Schools address

Peoria School District 150 Superintendent Grenita Lathan delivered her third State of the Schools address.  About 300 people attended the breakfast meeting at Four Points Sheraton.  Lathan says the district is having to operate on a slim budget as it grapples with annual deficits and less state funding.  She says the recent two-year contract extension with the Peoria Federation of Teachers helps the district financially:

$100,000 fireworks display returning to Peoria

The Red, White and BOOM celebration is coming back to Peoria for the 27th year. The cities of Peoria and East Peoria as well as UnityPoint Health-Methodist come together with other area organizations to host the 100-thousand dollar firework production. East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says the event is a signal of unity between the two communities:

"Since then, of course, its not just unity between our community, but it's the whole unity with the entire region - all the people it draws in. It gives me great satisfaction to see families down there at the riverfront, both sides, you can hear what's going on," Mingus says.

Peoria is a finalist for All-America City Award

The city of Peoria is in the running to receive an All-America City Award. The Young Professionals Organization of Greater Peoria announced the city is one of 20 finalists for the designation. It would be the fourth time the city has received the award. The last time Peoria won was in 1989.

Peoria police search for double shooting suspect

Marquis Costic

Peoria Police are looking for a suspect in a double shooting Sunday that killed a 17-year-old boy.  Police say Marquis Costic is wanted in the shooting at Warren and Butler Streets that left Treyshawn Blakely dead. Police say another unidentified person was shot during the same incident and taken to a local hospital.  Costic is described as a five-foot-seven black male with braided hair. Police say they did NOT recover the semi-automatic murder weapon at his home, but did find other weapons.  Costic is considered armed and dangerous.

Peoria police warn of illegal drug use

The Peoria Police Department is warning the public of the dangers of using illegal drugs.  They say the city has seen three deaths and two hospitalizations this week that might be heroin or drug-related.  Police say they’re not condoning the use of illegal drugs.  Police say people need to warn loved ones of the potential dangers of using illegal substances.

Durbin learns about Peoria’s Don’t Shoot program

  U.S. Senator Dick Durbin met with area law enforcement officials to learn about Peoria's anti-violence initiative.   The Don't Shoot program is based on the book by David Kennedy and addresses ways the community and law enforcement can reduce violent crime. Peoria Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard says shootings are down 26-percent since January compared to the same time last year.
