There's a new plaque at the state capitol in Springfield commemorating President Barack Obama's 2016 speech to lawmakers in the Illinois House.

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he spends his time sweeping and mopping floors while serving a federal prison sentence after corruption convictions.

The Obama Presidential Center won't be a part of the presidential library network operated by the National Archives and Records Administration.  The move will free the Obama Foundation from amassing an endowment equivalent to 60% of the construction cost. 

Attorneys general from 20 states and the District of Columbia are faulting Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for rolling back Obama-era guidance they say is helping protect student loan borrowers.  In a letter sent Monday, Democratic attorneys general Lisa Madigan of Illinois, and Maura Healey of Massachusetts called on DeVos to restore the memos instituted by the federal Education Department last year under President Barack Obama.

Democratic lawmakers from Chicago have proposed bills to make former President Barack Obama's birthday a state holiday.  The three bills would all make Obama's birthday, Aug. 4, an official holiday.  Two House bills, proposed by Democratic Reps. Andre Thapedi and Sonya Harper would make Aug. 4 a "legal holiday," in which state government offices shut down, and schools and businesses have the option of closing.

President Barack Obama is leaving office without granting early prison release to former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.  Obama released a list of his final acts of clemency today and the list didn't include Blagojevich. 


Gov. Bruce Rauner and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth were among those volunteering to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Illinois.  The Republican governor and Democratic senator were at Chicago's Marie Curie High School for an event hosted by the nonprofit group City Year Chicago.

President Barack Obama is celebrating the World Series champion Chicago Cubs before he leaves office.  Cubs players filed into the White House East Room on Martin Luther King Day for Obama's final ceremony for a championship sports team. Even sweeter for Obama is that the Cubs hail from his hometown.

HONOLULU (AP) - President Barack Obama is entering the closing stretch of his presidency. He’s in an eleventh-hour push to tie up loose ends and put the finishing touches on his legacy before handing the reins to President-elect Donald Trump.

Obama returns to Washington at midday Monday from Hawaii with less than three weeks. His final days will largely be consumed with a bid to protect his endangered health care law, a major farewell speech and the ongoing handover of power to Trump's team.

A new U.S. surgeon general report calls for a major cultural shift in the way Americans view drug and alcohol addiction.  President Barack Obama's surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, released the report. It details the toll addiction takes on the nation and explains how brain science offers hope for recovery.

President Barack Obama has invited the World Series champion Chicago Cubs to visit him at the White House. The team will have to make travel arrangements quickly, though, because Obama leaves office in mid-January.

Medicaid has long been the stepchild of government health care programs. Now it's finally coming into its own, even as the 2016 presidential election could change its fate.  Under President Barack Obama, the federal-state program for low-income people has expanded to cover more than 70 million individuals, and it has shed much of the social stigma from its earlier years as a welfare benefit.

President Barack Obama has cut short the sentences 111 federal inmates, including eight Illinoisans, in his latest round of commutations for those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses.

The White House is firing back at Sen. Mark Kirk for his comment that President Barack Obama was "acting like the drug dealer in chief" when the administration made a $400 million cash payment to Iran.  The Illinois Republican criticized Obama over the payment, which was contingent on the release of American prisoners. 

President Barack Obama is now 55 years old. His birthday came and went last week, and most Illinois residents probably didn't take notice.

They may have, had legislation sponsored by Illinois State Representative Andre Thapedi passed. He wanted Obama's birthday to be recognized as a holiday in the President's adopted home state.

Last night, a woman born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, accepted the Democratic nomination for President. In roughly 100 days, voters will decide whether Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump will be the next president, which means it’s the beginning of the end for President Barack Obama. Illinois Public Radio’s Amanda Vinicky reports, from the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.


A person familiar with the selection process says an exact location for President Barack Obama's presidential library has been chosen.

The individual says Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have selected Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side for the library and presidential center.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the individual wasn't authorized to discuss the choice before a formal announcement.

Barack Obama's presidential library on Chicago's South side will be designed by a New York architectural firm that designed the David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago.  The Barack Obama Foundation announced that Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects has been chosen for the library that will be built near the university where Obama once taught constitutional law. 

Long before President Barack Obama's trip this week, the U.S. has had a physical foothold in Cuba at Guantanamo Bay. Obama's seeking to close down the detention center there. But Illinois' Senators are split on its future.

President Barack Obama's nomination of a merely moderate judge for the Supreme Court is putting one of his potential successors in a political bind. 


Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk has become the first Republican senator to 

break with party leaders and call for a vote on President Barack Obama's Supreme Court pick.  Kirk says the Senate should "man up and cast a vote."

CHICAGO (AP) - Three members of Illinois' congressional delegation will accompany President Barack Obama to Cuba this weekend.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Reps. Cheri Bustos and Jan Schakowsky will travel to Cuba on Sunday with the president. They are among 20 members of Congress going on the trip to Havana. They will meet with Cuban officials, attend an Obama speech, state dinner and a baseball game.

Durbin previously visited Cuba in January as part of a congressional delegation and Bustos visited in October as part of an agricultural trade mission.  

The nominee to be the next Librarian of Congress has ties to President Barack Obama dating to her tenure with the Chicago Public Library more than two decades ago.

Supporters of changing the way Illinois draws its legislative districts did not waste any time yesterday. They immediately began claiming President Barack Obama endorsed their idea in his speech. But the president has taken pains to be more nuanced.
