Peoria County begins issuing same sex marriage licenses

Same-sex couples in Peoria County can start applying for marriage licenses Monday. Several counties in Illinois already started issuing marriage licenses before the new state law took effect Sunday. Peoria County Clerk Steve Sonnemaker says his office has received a few people expressing interest in applying for the marriage license:

Quinn signs IL same-sex marriage bill into law

IL lawmakers approve same-sex marriage measure, heads to Gov. Quinn

Same-sex marriage will soon be legal in Illinois. The House narrowly approved legislation Tuesday, and Governor Pat Quinn says he'll sign it into law. The vote came after months of intense lobbying. As Illinois Public Radio’s Brian Mackey reports, both sides claimed they were fighting for individual freedom.

Hundreds rally for same-sex marriage in Springfield, opposition rally planned Wed.

Back on Valentine's Day, the state Senate approved legislation that would allow gays and lesbians to get married in Illinois. The hope then was that Illinois would become the tenth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Eight months later, it still hasn't happened.

  A Republican Congressman says he believes his party's chairman should be allowed to complete his term, after taking a controversial stance earlier this year.  High-level Republicans unsuccessfully tried to overthrow State Party Chairman Pat Brady after he announced his support for same-sex marriage. Congresssman Rodney Davis of Taylorville stands by Brady, saying he did a “good job” bringing the GOP together during the 2012 election season.  Instead of focusing on inner-party politics, Davis says Republicans should focus on solving the problems that plague Illinois.

Residents protest same-sex marriage in Springfield

Hundreds of Illinois residents crowded both inside and outside the state Capitol Wednesday, protesting same-sex marriage. They wore bright yellow buttons depicting stick figures of one man and one woman.
David Smith is the Illinois Family Institute's executive director. He says limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples is not a form of discrimination.

"Marriage benefits society. It's the perfect environment to raise the next generation of children. Children do best in a mother-father home," Smith says.
