Durbin Leads Discussion On Combatting Opioid Epidemic

The sweeping prevalence of opioid addiction is outpacing the amount of treatment options and funding available. That was the theme of a panel discussion led by US Sen. Dick Durbin at Heartland Community Clinic Fri.

Durbin was joined by local health professionals, advocates and emergency responders in a conversation aiming to push funding for legislation to address the issue.

       CHICAGO (AP) - The office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois says he has met with officials in Haiti to discuss the status of U.S. assistance programs more than five years after an earthquake killed thousands.      A news release from Durbin's office says he and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida were in Haiti over the weekend. The release says they met with Haiti President Michel Martelly, U.S. Ambassador Pamela White and other officials.

  Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, one of the most powerful Democrats in the Senate, is traveling the state as a candidate. That may be a reflection of the fact Durbin faces millionaire Illinois State Senator Jim Oberweis in the November general election. Oberweis won the Republican primary Tuesday, and spent significant personal money to do it.
